Rivers of Podgorica

The rivers of Podgorica are a gift from nature and what makes the city a more pleasant place to live.
Moraca
The Morača River divides the city into two parts, so that is the reason why we have the term, and now the neighborhood “Preko Morača”. When you say Preko Morača, you used to mean the larger part of Podgorica west of the Morača river, and now you know exactly which part of the city you mean and which streets and boulevards belong there.

This is the river on which the city was originally built. In the last couple of decades, a large number of bridges have been built, with the most popular being the Millennium Bridge, which is one of the symbols of this city.

The central Podgorica neighborhoods facing the Morača river are: Momišići, Zlatica, Zagorič, Centar, Preko Morače, Stara varoš, Zabjelo, 1.maj, Donja Gorica, Gornja Gorica, Dahna, Dajbabe and Donji kokoti.

Zeta
Rijeka Zeta is mostly in the municipality of Danilovgrad, only towards the end of it is it in Podgorica. The Zeta River is a quiet and peaceful beauty that winds through the northwestern part of Podgorica, combining nature, history and everyday life of the city. Its clear waters, green shores and shady bridges make every corner exude the serenity and authentic charm of the old Podgorica landscape.

Zeta passes through the settlements of Mareza, Rogami, Tološi, Zlatica and Duklja, bringing a touch of nature and freshness to the rhythm of the city. On its shores there are numerous picnic spots and secluded areas ideal for rest, fishing or a leisurely walk along the murmur of the river. The Marez spring is especially famous, one of the favorite places of Podgorica residents to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy nature.

At the place where the Zeta flows into the Morača, near ancient Duklja, history and nature come together, as a reminder that it was along these rivers that the first traces of life in the Podgorica valley sprung up.

Pond
A Podgorica resident says: “Well, do you know about Ribnica? It’s that little river that shyly weaves its way through the heart of Podgorica, and it meets at the end of Morača, at that old bridge. At first glance, nothing special, thin, calm, you almost don’t notice it, but if you know Podgorica, you know that it all started there.

They say that the old Podgorica was born on its shores, from which the present one later grew. There, people traded, fell in love, discussed politics and football, just like today.

When it’s summer, Ribnica can dry up, but again, when you come across it, a kind of peace comes over you… as if you feel the spirit of the old town. There’s the Old Town, Bridge on Ribnica, and all those narrow cobbled streets that tell stories better than we do.

She’s not like Moraca, she doesn’t have that strength, she doesn’t have that width, but she has soul. And the people of Podgorica know it: without Ribnica, there would be neither us nor this city that breathes between two rivers.

Ribnica passes through Konik, Masline, Ibričevina, Cvijetin Brijeg, Centar, Durres and Stara Varoš.

A trifle
The river Sitnica, known in its upper course as Matica, begins its course in the Gornja Gorica area in Podgorica and flows through Donja Gorica, Dajbabe, Zabjelo and Donje Kokote. Its course is calm and quiet, with green banks and mostly natural surroundings.

Sitnica is a smaller but clear river. In the upper course, the river flows through meadows, forest areas and undeveloped areas. The river Sitnica and its surroundings preserve the feeling of untouched nature in the surroundings of Podgorica, far from the noise and hustle and bustle of the city.

Tubular
Cijevna was a Podgorica river for a long time, and now it belongs to the “newer” municipalities of Zeta and Tuza. It may happen that in some places it is a little bit close to Podgorica, but the main bathing areas are outside the main ones of the city.

It is characterized by a large number of beaches, which are very good to visit during the hot Podgorica summer, by its clean and clear water, by its canyon often called “Montenegro’s Colorado”, and by the waterfall known as “Niagara”, which is a popular destination for swimming and enjoying nature.

Mareza
All the above-mentioned rivers are known for their purity and clear flow, but one is the Mareza. Every day, the people of Podgorica have the opportunity to taste it in their homes. Mareza quietly sneaks through Podgorica, then disappears into the water pipes, and there she is in our glasses. A small river, a big influence on our city and everyday life. It flows through the Podgorica settlements of Tološi, Gornja Gorica, Donja Gorica and Donji Kokoti
